Scalable token architecture starts with one rule: raw values should not leak into product components. Once they do, every redesign becomes a search-and-replace problem.

Base tokens hold the palette. Semantic tokens give those values purpose. Component tokens define the local contract for a button, card, input, or navigation item.

Because a raw value does not explain intent. Semantic tokens let the product change visual decisions without rewriting every component.
